The ‘cathedral on the lake’ stands at the beginning of Salò’s historic centre. It’s a treasure trove of art and architecture, with a precious collection of paintings and a marvellous wooden crucifix.

Built in 1453 on an old 13th century Romanesque structure, the cathedral is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and has been the most significant religious building in the town since its construction.

The visit starts from the square outside, that we reach after a regenerative walk along the lake front. The cathedral has a somber style, with its unfinished terracotta façade. But the true surprise starts once you enter. Indeed, the interior is a true treasure trove of artistic gems scattered along the three naves and in the presbytery, where we can admire a noteworthy wooden crucifix carved by Giovanni Teutonico and the imposing Ancona di Salò, a sculpted altarpiece by Pietro Bussolo with ten wooden statues each positioned in a niche.

Among the most significant paintings are “Madonna and Saints Bonaventura and Sebastiano” and “St. Anthony of Padua and a donor” by Romanino. Other famous Italian artists are present in the church: Moretto, Zenone Veronese, Paolo Veneziano, Palma il Giovane.
